Biological water treatment method using a macromolecular carbohydrate such as alginate optionally with vitamins

A method for biological treatment of water comprises adding macromolecular carbohydrates at a quantity of 0.04 to 600 mg/kg of BSB5,zw or 0.0014 to 14 mg/kg pf dry activated sludge per day to the water prior to treatment or during treatment in a biological water treatment system. Preferably the macromolecular carbohydrate used is sodium alginate, vitamins such as biotin, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride or aminobenzoic acid can also be used.
