A method for minimizing a broadcast acknowledgement channel during preamble transmission, comprising determining a forward link channel quality from an observed pilot signal transmission; randomly selecting an access sequence from a group of access sequences based on the observed pilot signal transmission, wherein the group of access sequences is designated for a range of forward link channel quality (CQI) values; and transmitting the access sequence as well as a corresponding wireless communications apparatus.
