PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure a power performance according to a request for acceleration. SOLUTION: This continuously variable transmission comprises a primary pulley and a secondary pulley driven by the primary pulley through a belt. The request for acceleration from a driver is detected by an accelerator opening sensor 37 and a vehicle speed is detected by a vehicle speed sensor 35. The transmission is changeable between a continuously variable shift mode in which a reduction gear ratio is continuously varied based on the request for acceleration and a stepwise variable shift mode in which the reduction gear ratio is stepwise varied. When the request for acceleration is equal to or more than a specified value, the stepwise variable shift mode is used. In the mode, the primary pulley is stepwise controlled to a reduction gear ratio obtained according to a throttle opening and the vehicle speed between an upper limit rotational speed and a lower limit rotational speed. When the rotational speed of the primary pulley reaches the upper limit rotational speed, the reduction gear ratio is varied so that it is reduced to the lower limit rotational speed.
