PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hoisting machine for an elevator capable of protecting the braking surface of a brake against foreign matter and enabling a reduction in the overall size of an elevator apparatus. SOLUTION: This hoisting machine for the elevator comprises a base body having a first cylindrical part opening to one side, a spindle fitted to the base body and having the same center axis as that of the cylindrical part of the base body, a drive sheave around which a main rope is wrapped, a bearing rotatably supporting the drive sheave on the spindle, a second cylindrical part formed on one side of the drive sheave and having an outer peripheral surface facing the inner peripheral surface of the first cylindrical part, an armature fitted to the outer peripheral surface of the second cylindrical part and facing a stator winding fitted to the inner peripheral surface of the first cylindrical part, a braking surface formed on the inside of the second cylindrical part and crossing perpendicularly to the rotating axis of the spindle, and an electromagnetic brake installed in the base body and pressing the braking surface in the rotating axis direction of the spindle by a brake pad facing the braking surface. The bearing comprises a first bearing supporting a load acting on the spindle in the radial direction and a second bearing supporting a load acting on the spindle in the axial direction.
