PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To give more precise exposure to a photoreceptor drum 102 by preventing the thermal expansion of a housing which holds optical components 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, with a low cost constitution. SOLUTION: The subject scanning optical device 101 comprises a plurality of units 1 for emitting rays, a polygon mirror 4 for performing scanning by deflecting a plurality of rays from the units 1, a motor 3 for rotary-driving the polygon mirror 4, and optical components 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 for guiding the plurality of deflected and scanned rays on the photoreceptor drum 102. The scanning optical device furthermore comprises a light source holding housing 10 for holding the plurality of light sources, an optical component holding housings 9a, 9b for holding the optical components 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, and a motor holding housing 11 for holding the light source holding housing 10, the optical component holding housings 9a, 9b and the motor 3. At least either one of the motor holding housing 11 or the light source holding housing 10 has a thermal conductivity higher than the optical component holding housings 9a, 9b.
