PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a scanning optical apparatus with which such an aberration variation in an environmental variation as a register slippage in a main scanning direction is reduced and to obtain an image forming apparatus using the scanning optical apparatus. SOLUTION: The scanning optical apparatus comprises: a deflection means 5 which deflects a luminous flux emitted from a light source means 1; a scanning optical system 6 which guides the luminous flux deflected with the deflection means onto a face to be scanned 8; and a synchronous detection optical system 73 which guides the luminous flux from the deflection means onto a synchronous detection means 72 for obtaining a synchronous signal for scanning the face to be scanned. The positioning of at least a scanning optical element composing the scanning optical system in the direction perpendicular to an optical axis in a main scanning cross section is made at a part of the scanning optical element other than the part corresponding to the optical axis, and the scanning optical system and the synchronous detection optical system are separately composed.
