PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a road marking detection device for a vehicle capable of improving accuracy of recognizing road markings. SOLUTION: In the image data inputted from an external photographing camera 11, a detection line setting part 24 sets a plurality of detection lines D<SB>1</SB>, ..., D<SB>k</SB>, ..., D<SB>n</SB>(the setting number n is an arbitrary natural number where the natural number k is 1≤k≤n) in the width direction of the running route R at predetermined intervals in the running route R of an own vehicle detected by a road shape recognition part 23. A brightness detection part 25 detects a change in brightness such as luminance and lightness in the length direction for each of the detection lines D<SB>1</SB>, ..., D<SB>k</SB>, ..., D<SB>n</SB>. A road marking recognition part 26 detects the presence of the predetermined road markings such as a stop line, and the distance to the road marking based on the position of changes in brightness in the length direction for each of the detection lines D<SB>1</SB>, ..., D<SB>k</SB>, ..., D<SB>n</SB>detected by the brightness detection part 25.
