PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control device starting an engine and quickly coping with a situation even if irregular situation happens during economy running operation in which the engine is automatically stopped during traveling. SOLUTION: In the engine control device provided with an engine automatic stopping means automatically stopping the engine of a vehicle when predetermined conditions are satisfied, the engine is automatically stopped to decelerate the vehicle when traveling speed of the vehicle exceeds the maximum speed on a road where the traveling speed of the vehicle is regulated. And, when approach of a following vehicle is detected or an obstacle on forward road is detected while the vehicle travels with automatically stopping the engine, the engine is restarted to prepare for quickly coping with the situation.
