The State finding process is applied to a heat transfer device through which at least two media flow, with heat being transferred between them. At least one physical measuring variable of at least one of the heat media is measured during heat transfer, and the value of at least one state variable depending on the measuring value and characterizing the state of the heat transfer device is determined on the basis of the measured values or of their measuring signals.
