PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an EL element that has a flat electrode without any steps inside, can uniformly display an image, and is low in costs by burying a back-side electrode in a glass substrate for integration; and to provide a method for manufacturing the EL element. SOLUTION: At least a light emission layer is included between two opposing electrodes 2, 6, the back-side electrode 2 is a metal sheet 2 whose surface has an oxide film, such as Cr<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, and one or the entire portion is buried in the glass substrate 1 for integration. In the method, a plurality of metal sheets 2 whose surfaces have an oxide film are arranged in parallel in a lower die 11, the glass plate 1 or glass powder is put on the metal sheets, an upper die 12 is pressure-welded from above for heating and pressing, one or entire portion of the metal sheet 2 is buried in the glass substrate 1 for integration by melting glass, a phosphor containing at least a light emission layer 4 is formed on the obtained substrate 1 in which the electrode is buried, and a transparent electrode 6 and a transparent substrate 7 are arranged on the phosphor.
