PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of improving an MTF in the sub-scanning direction. SOLUTION: The image reader is composed of a line image sensor 1, a gain amplifier 2 for amplifying an analog signal generated by reading a reflected light amount of an original manuscript by the line image sensor 1, an A-D converter 3 for converting the output of the gain amplifier 2 to a digital signal, a line memory 41 capable of holding the digital signal outputted by an amount equivalent to a plurality of lines in the order of scan lines, a pixel data calculator 44 for executing required calculation processing to a digital output from the line memory 41, and a driving signal generator 46 capable of setting a scan speed in the sub-scanning direction independently from a scaling factor.
