A process for forming a rivet button from a sheet of metal (70) comprises, in a first operation forming a unitary annular bead (104) protruding from a planar surface of the sheet. In a second operation the annular bead and a planar center panel of the sheet are formed into a large diameter protrusion (116) establishing a major portion of the rivet height, and finally the large diameter protrusion is formed into a unitary rivet button (156).
