<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new medical and/or dental functional material using a reaction product (DNA chitosan composite) obtained by a reaction between chitosan and a DNA molecule as a genes and has biocompatibility, antimicrobial properties and good shaping properties, and to provide a method for producing the functional material. <P>SOLUTION: This material comprises the excipient-containing or excipient-free DNA/chitosan composite that is obtained by the electrostatic reaction between DNA and chitosan in which the DNA constituting the composite includes the specific double stranded DNA spiral structure without damage and the composite substantially does not have the solubility in water.
