The invention relates to an electric power steering system for motor vehicles, comprising an electric servomotor which drives a worm arranged on a first shaft; a worm gear which is arranged on a second shaft and which meshes with the worm, wherein the worm gear is actively connected to an input shaft of a steering mechanism and wherein the first shaft and second shaft are rotationally mounted in bearings inside a common gear housing. It is possible to adjust the gearing in a backlash-free manner by virtue of the fact that at least one of the bearings is a rolling bearing with an eccentric outer ring.
