PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method that suppresses a density difference between intervals of element arrangement lines from being visually recognized to be joints in the case of reading an image by using a CCD wherein the element arrangement lines are divided into a plurality of the intervals and providing an output and that is always stably used without being affected by a secular change or the like of an apparatus condition. SOLUTION: A shift electrode 2 of a shift gate 1 can select to which of odd side CCD shift registers (1), (3) electric charges are shifted at an overlapped part of the shift registers (1), (3), and a connection state of the shift electrode 2 depending on H, L levels from a number of pixel setting circuit determines to which of the shift registers (1), (3) stored electric charges of photodiodes are to be transferred. The number of pixel setting circuit sets a control value by number of pixels to the number of pixel setting circuit shift registers (1), (3) so as to be able to revise a division position of the pixel arrangement by each read line. When the number of setting pixels is changed at random, the joints form no straight line so as to suppress manifest existence of the density difference between the division intervals.
