Packets transported on a video network indicate whether video signals were synchronised with a synchronisation signal at time of packet creation

A video data network source device (10, Fig. 1) receives a video signal and an associated synchronisation signal and launches video data packets representing the video signal onto a packet-based data network (20, Fig. 1). The source device detects whether the video signal is synchronized with the synchronisation signal 100 and provides this information to the network 130, preferably by adding a flag to video packet headers. The video packets are received at a destination device (30, Fig. 2). The invention can be used to provide a visual indication to a user of the destination device that there is a synchronisation problem in the source device. The flag may indicate the phase difference between the video signal and the synchronisation signal.
