PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type liquid crystal display device in which gradation performance and moving picture performance are simultaneously improved in a simple manner. SOLUTION: The projection type liquid crystal display device, which forms an image by modulating light from a light source in accordance with an image signal by a spatial optical modulation element and projecting the modulated light onto a screen, includes a luminance detection part detecting a luminance signal from the image signal, a light quantity control part controlling incident light quantity on the spatial optical modulation element by intercepting the light made incident on the spatial optical modulation element from the light source in accordance with the luminance signal, and an image quality control part modulating an input signal in the spatial optical modulation element generated from the image signal in accordance with the luminance signal.
