PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable easy setting of required threshold values for realizing stable detection operation. SOLUTION: A display portion 21 and a manipulator 22 are provided on the upper surface of the amplifier 2 of a proximity switch. In a mode for setting the threshold values for object detection, a CPU in the amplifier 2 samples a predetermined number of measurement values in response to a first time of teaching operation to determine the band of fluctuation between average measurement values and measurement values. Thereafter, a process for determining degree of allowance of measurement values at the present moment to the measurement values at the first time of teaching operation and a process for displaying the calculated degree of allowance on the display portion 21 are repeated until a second time of teaching operation will be conducted. The degree of allowance can be determined by determining the differences between the measurement values determined at the first time of teaching operation and measurement values at the present moment to divide the result by the band of the fluctuation of the measurement values.
