PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motion vector detector in which detection precision is increased, detection time is shortened, and the operability is improved, and also to provide a method for detecting a motion vector, and a camera. SOLUTION: An evaluation frame 13a photographed at a prescribed time point and a reference frame 13b photographed before prescribed time as compared with the prescribed time point are acquired by an imaging data acquisition section 11, the prescribed region of the evaluation frame 13a is set to be an evaluation region at an evaluation region setting section 16 as an evaluation region, and a reference region corresponding to the evaluation region is set by a reference region setting section 17 by the reference frame 13b. The cross correlation between the evaluation and reference regions is obtained by an interframe correlation operation section 19, and the self correlation of the evaluation region is obtained by an interframe correlation operation section 18. Then, the motion vector is obtained by a motion vector detector 21 by following the calculated result from the interframe correlation operation section 19, and reliability in the result detected by the motion vector detector 21 is determined by a reliability determination section 20 by following the calculated result of the interframe correlation operation section 18.
