PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a microorganism having useful application field such as the effective utilization of biomass. SOLUTION: The microorganism belongs to the genus Paenibacillus growing in alkaline environment. Especially, a microorganism belonging to the genus Paenibacillus, Paenibacillus kazusaensis T-5 strain is collected from a tea plantation of Shizuoka prefecture by an alkaline catalase addition culture method. The microorganism grows in a natural medium under alkaline condition (pH 9.2), and is a spore-bearing bacillus negative to Gram staining, free from dye-productivity, having mobility and positive to catalase reaction and having wide substrate assimilating property to glucose, fructose, D-xylose, mannose, mannitol, and the like.
