PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inexpensively and efficiently producing 1,3-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid. SOLUTION: The method for producing 1,3-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid comprises oxidizing a 1,3-dialkylnaphthalene with oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst composed of a 2-6C lower aliphatic carboxylic acid solvent, a heavy metal and a bromine compound in a liquid phase.
