A personal authentication system (10) for authenticating a user based on biometric information. A hologram is formed on a holographic recording section (13) of an optical information recording medium (12) through interference between an object light and a reference light subjected to spatial light modulation with encrypted authentication information for recording based on the biometric information on the user obtained by means of a biological information sensor (14). At the time of authentication, an information processor (16) processes biometric information acquired directly from the user into encrypted authentication information for correlation, and a spatial light modulator (20) modulates a reference light for reproducing a hologram with the encrypted authentication information for correlation in order to detect the authenticity of the reproduced image, thus preventing leakage of authentication information.
