The invention comprises dyes which, in their free acid form, are of formula <FORM:0824284/IV(c)/1> where X is a phenyl- or benzoyl-amino group which may be substituted, the SO3H groups being the only groups present which impart solubility in water. They are made by conventional methods from corresponding o-hydroxy-o1-alkoxy dyes, the alkoxy groups being present in the diphenyl residue. The starting disazo dyes are made by coupling tetrazotized 3,31 - dialkoxy - 4,41 - diaminodiphenyls, in either order of succession with appropriate 2-phenyl- or -benzoyl-amino-5-naphthol sulphonic acids and 2-naphthol-6,8-disulphonic acid. Specified values of X are phenyl- and methyl- and p-chloro- and -methoxy-phenyl- and benzoyl- and p-chloro- and 2,4-dichloro-benzoyl-amino. Preferably X is of formula NH-(CO)n-1-R, where R is a benzene residue and n is 1 or 2. The invention also includes mixtures of the above dyes with the copper complexes of dyes of formula <FORM:0824284/IV(c)/2> where X is as above, preferably <FORM:0824284/IV(c)/3> where n is 1 or 2, the mixture comprising at most 60% of the latter dyes. The mixtures may be made by conventional methods. The copper complexes are of particular use for dyeing and printing fibres of natural or regenerated cellulose which are dyed in blue shades.
