In a machine comprising a press in which a cover sheet is bonded to a base sheet formed with at least one recess containing the article or articles to be packaged, a filled base sheet and cover sheet are assembled on a supporting carriage which is movable into and out of the press and provided with an adhesive-applying device, and the cover sheet of the next assembly is supported in the path of movement of the carriage so that adhesive is applied thereto as the carriage is moved into or out of the press. The latter comprises a bedplate 2 and an upper die member 8 actuated by a piston 5 in a hydraulic cylinder 4. A carriage 12, supporting a lower die member 13, is mounted on rollers running in horizontal guides on a bracket 11 and is movable by a handle 27 between the position shown and an operated position in which the lower die is aligned with the upper die. A finger 17 on the carriage operates a switch 18 to initiate downward movement of the upper die when the carriage reaches its operative position. A yieldable roller 21 is mounted on the carriage so that it engages a felt pad 28 in a trough 29 filled with adhesive when the carriage is in its withdrawn position and rolls over a coating grid 25 as the carriage is moved into the press. Tables 35 and 36 are provided for the support of cover sheets and base sheets respectively, and operators are positioned at stations A and B. 71 is an inverted cover sheet placed on the grid 25 ; 72 and 73 are cover sheets for succeeding assemblies ; 76 is an unfilled base sheet ; 75, 75 are filled base sheets and 74 is an assembly of a filled base sheet and a cover sheet which has been coated with adhesive during the preceding cycle of operation. Assembly 74 is placed on the die 13 and the carriage moved into the press, thus coating the sheet 71 which is removed or replaced by the sheet 72 while the press is operating. Sheet 71 is then placed on base sheets 75 and the cycle is repeated. |
