[Also in Group XXIX] A ring of metal plates is pressed closely around a cylindrical structure by at least one rope under tension, rollers being interposed between the rope and the plates so that the tension is equalised throughout the whole length of the rope. In this manner a ring of reinforcing plates is held around a pressure vessel during the butt welding of the plates. To provide one or more layers of reinforcing rings 13 made up of plates 14, lugs 15 are welded to the structure 10, and each plate 14 is centrally held by clamps 25 on brackets 23 bolted to the lugs 15. A harness consisting of ropes 7 attached by clamps 6 to bars 1 carrying rollers 3 is suspended from the top of the structure 10, and the ropes 7 are tensioned by devices 19, e.g. hydraulic rams, to force the plates 14 tightly around the structure, whereupon the plates are butt welded. Indicators 20 measure the tension of each rope.
