PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner and its control method for guaranteeing a life of a driving part for a long period of time, not only for improving energy utilization efficiency. SOLUTION: The air conditioner, including an indoor unit installed in a room and having an indoor heat exchanger for exchanging heat with indoor air, and an outdoor unit connected to the indoor unit by a refrigerant pipe, installed outside, and exchanging heat with a refrigerant, is provided with a compressing part provided on the outdoor unit for varying a compression capacity of the refrigerant at more than three stages, a driving part for driving the compressing part, and a control part for controlling the driving part so that the driving part rotates at an optimal rotation speed by previously storing an optimal capacity of the compressing part and the optimal rotation speed of the driving part by a requested capacity of the indoor unit, and driving the compressing part at the optimal capacity in accordance with the requested capacity calculated by calculation of the requested capacity of the indoor unit.
