PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the background light emission colors on a screen consisting of cells different in light emission color achromatic by applying a voltage common to all the light emission colors by suppressing the occurrence of disturbance in display. SOLUTION: The initialization to cancel the binary setting of an amount of wall charges at the screen by a discharge other than a microdischarge at which electrode groups coated with a plurality of kinds of phosphors become cathodes is performed at least once by each of frames and the special initialization to erase the unnecessary wall charges at the screen by the discharge at which the electrode groups become the cathodes and which is stronger than the discharge in the initialization is performed at a frequency of once per two or more M pieces of the frames.
