<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positioning device capable of moving a mobile element to a desired position at high speed regardless of the distance traveled by the mobile element, relating to a positioning technique for positioning the mobile element in an industrial machine tool. <P>SOLUTION: The positioning device is provided having a position command means for issuing a command to move the mobile element 20 to a desired position, and first position control means 17, 18, 19 for moving the mobile element from its current position to the desired position according to the position command means and stopping it at the desired position. The positioning device further includes second position control means 15, 12, 23 that, while comparing the position of the mobile element with the desired position as the mobile element moves according to the first position control means, help control the movement of the mobile element so that the mobile element reaches and stops at the desired position earlier than if the mobile element is moved to the desired position by the first position control means alone.
