PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an azimuth measuring method and an azimuth measuring instrument capable of preventing coordinates different from a true reference point from being erroneously estimated as the reference point, when affected by an abnormal magnetic field, and when the azimuth measuring instrument is not moved sufficiently, in acquiring an output data group. SOLUTION: Outputs of X-axis and Y-axis Hall elements are acquired in ten points (S23) to determine whether the reference point is found once or more or not (S24). The propriety, as earth magnetism size, of a distance between the reference point and the up-to-date output is determined when the reference point is found (S26). When proper, an old data is deleted from a data buffer part 18, the output data acquired in this time is added thereto (S27), the reference point is estimated to make the distance from an output value equal (S29), and whether a radius distance between the estimated reference point and an circumference formed of the respective output values is proper as an earth magnetism size or not is determined (S30).
