PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hinge unit which can be put to both right-handed use and left-handed use and which allows a receiver section to rotate beyond a certain calling position when the hinge unit is used in a mobile phone. SOLUTION: A projection portion 33 is formed on an end face 32 of a first rotating member 3. A short recess 43 and a long recess 44 are formed on an end face 42 of a second rotating member 4. At both end portions of the short recess 43, there are formed engagement surfaces 43a, 43b which run against both ends of the projection portion 33 to thereby inhibit relative rotation of the first and second rotating members 3, 4 with the force of a predetermined strength. At one end portion of the long recess 44, there is formed an inclined plane 44a which runs against one end of the projection portion 33 to thereby rotatingly urge the first rotating member 3 in one direction with respect to the second rotating member 4. At the other end of the long recess 44, there is formed an inclined plane 44b which runs against the other end of the projection portion 33 to thereby rotatingly urge the first rotating member 3 in the other direction with respect to the second rotating member 4. The inclined planes 44a, 44b are located symmetrically with respect to a line which extends on the middle between the engagement surfaces 43a, 43b and which is perpendicular to the axial line of the second rotating member 4.
