PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera capable of performing an accurate clamping process to an image signal even when a high luminance object enters at an end portion of a screen. SOLUTION: An image signal corresponding to an optical image is to be outputted from a CCD imager 16, and amount of incident lights to the CCD imager 16 is to be limited by an aperture unit 14. A CPU 40 is designed to adjust an exposure period of the CCD imager 16 based on an average luminance value of a normal evaluation area assigned to the central portion of the screen among image signals outputted from the CCD imager 16. The CPU 40 is further designed to adjust aperture volume of the aperture unit 14 based on the average luminance value of the predetermined evaluation area assigned to the end portion of the screen among the image signals outputted from the CCD imager 16. Therefore, photographing can be performed by appropriate light exposure in response to the brightness of the main object. Since incident light volume to the CCD imager 16 especially the incident light volume into the clamp area positioned at the end portion of the screen is limited by narrowing down the aperture unit 14 when a high luminance light is radiated to the end portion of the screen, the appropriate clamping process can be performed after preventing leaked potential from being flowed into the clamp area positioned at the end portion of the screen.
