PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface mounted optical isolator more excellent in productivity by reducing stress acting on a Faraday rotator. SOLUTION: The optical isolator is constituted of a pillar-shaped optical isolator element 1 where the optical surfaces of the plate-like Faraday rotator and a polarizer are made to face to each other and whose base is bonded on a plate-like alignment substrate 5, and magnets 6 bonded respectively on the substrate 5 so as to confront a pair of side surfaces of the element 1, and is formed so that the number of the bonding parts of the magnets 6 on the substrate 5 may be two or more.
