<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device capable of decreasing the frequency of cleaning operation. <P>SOLUTION: As a light source 20 is turned on, an air blower 70 rotates to take outside air in from an air sucking port 62 and cooling air is blown to the light source 20. This cooling air is blown from an air exhaust port 64 to a reflecting surface 56a to prevent dust from sticking on the reflecting surface 56a. Further, the air blown to the reflecting surface 56a is ionized by an ion generator 74. Consequently, the reflecting surface 56a is electrostatically discharged and becomes hard to adhere dust.
