PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader reducing noise in an image signal from an image sensor without causing a cost increase. SOLUTION: A flowchart for explaining read processing operations includes steps of: (ST1) moving a carriage 38 to the position of a shading plate 32; (ST 2) starting capturing of shading data obtained from reflection in the shading plate 32 from a light source 33 via a CCD image sensor 21; (ST3) destermining whether the amount of noises is more than a prescribed value by a noise discrimination circuit 24b; (ST5) interrupting capturing of the shading data if many noises are included; (ST7) completing the capturing of the shading data when the noises are not more than the prescribed value; and (ST8) executing reading of an original.
