[Also in Group XV] Apparatus for applying an adhesive tear strip to a wrapper so that one end of the strip overhangs the wrapper, comprises a pivoted presser roller 11 co-operating intermittently with a feed roller 6 to draw a web of strip material S from a reel 1, bands 30 feeding wrappers B to the feed roller 6 at every second revolution thereof and so that the leading edge of the wrapper B coincides with the leading edge of the strip web S at the nip of the rollers 6, 11. The presser roller 11 co-operates with the feed roller 6 in timed relationship therewith as the wrapper B reaches the nip whereby the web S is pressed on to the wrapper and both are fed forwards, a fixed knife 8 and a knife 7 on the feed roller 6 cutting a strip from the web after passage of the rear end B1, Fig. 5, of the wrapper beyond the knife 8. The roller 11 is mounted on an arm 12 pivoted at 13, a spring-urged cam lever 14 being fixed to the arm 12 and having a roller 15 engaging a cam 17 rotatable at such a rate that the roller 11 is drawn into contact with the feed roller 6 at each second revolution of the roller 6, and the web S thus remains stationary during alternate revolutions. During the stationary periods, a roller 4 around which the web runs to bring it into contact with a gumming roller 9, is moved out of contact with the roller 9 by means of a cam 23 which is also provided with a projection 23A for movement of the roller 4 so as to leave an ungummed portion of the web where the cut is to be made and so provide an adhesive-free extension tab. The leading end of the web is held by a suction head 5 operating continuously but permitting feed of the web by the rollers 6, 11. Two short cuts in the trailing end of the wrapper, one on each side of the extending strip, are made previously in the machine to facilitate easy tearing of the wrapper. |
