PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress uncomfortable sway-back along with reverse operation immediately before stop of an engine while making a piston 13 of a cylinder 12 which is stopped in an expansion stroke stop in a predetermined range R suitable for restart, in automatic stop of the engine 1. SOLUTION: For a predetermined period of time after the fuel cut, a throttle valve 23 is opened so that the scavenging is secured, and a power generation control of an alternator 28 and an opening control of the throttle valve 23 are performed, so that a degree of decrease in engine revolution speed is controlled. After exceeding a TDC last but one before the stop, fuel of a quantity depending on a TDC revolution speed at that time is injected into the cylinder 12 in a compression stroke (the cylinder which is stopped in the expansion stroke)(Inj1), to reduce a compression pressure by latent heat of vaporization. Further, after exceeding the last TDC, if a piston stop position which is estimated based on the TDC revolution speed is relatively close to a TDC with respect to the predetermined range R, the fuel is injected into the cylinder 12 in the compression stroke (the cylinder which is stopped in the compression stroke) after the reverse operation of the engine (Inj2).
