Magnetic position detector has a planar 4-layered detector (102a-d) for detection of a moving component with a repeating shape (101), e.g. teeth. Each layer has a planar detection coil pattern formed on a circuit board with the coil patterns of each layer having sinusoidal and then increasingly square wave shapes in the direction away from the component to be detected. Independent claims are also included for the following for three further position detectors with different configurations and or for detection of rotationally rather than linearly displaced components.
