A hydraulic cylinder (10) having a piston rod (13) that receives a retaining member (38). Moving with the piston rod (13) are spherical lock members (26) that re moved radially by the retaining member (38) to lock the piston rod (13) in the retracted position. The retaining member (38) upon fluid under pressure being applied thereto is moved to a position permitting radially inward movement of the members (26) so that the rod (13) is released.
