PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain a constitution that a developing unit and an image carrier can be selectively driven with the transmission at the time of monochromatic printing and full-color printing, regarding a color image forming apparatus constituted so that a plurality of developing units and image carriers are driven by a single driving source. SOLUTION: In the case the plurality of developing units or image carriers are driven by the single driving source through a gear train, a drive cutting/connecting means (electromagnetic clutch in this invention) is arranged just after branching the gear train into a drive train for Bk and a drive train for YMC and before branching the drive train for YMC into respective trains, and printing is performed while cutting the YMC drive at the time of monochromatic printing, but, at the time of full-color printing, while connecting the YMC drive.
