A chemical reactor has a column packed with forms that create passages and interfaces facilitating an exchange of heat and promoting the reaction. Each form is a metal or plastic plate that has been longitudinally sub-divided into strips that remain linked at each end of the tube. The linked and twisted strips are separated along their shanks by slits (32). The strips are twisted into semi-helical shape, U- and V-forms and incorporate apertures (7) that promote mixing of gas or liquid reactants. In form the plastic or metal plate is notional or real and the twisted form takes on a variety of shapes.
