In apparatus for the disposal of chad from a perforating mechanism a stream of fluid, e.g. air, is generated to pass through a chadreceiving shot 16 transverse to the direction of fall of the chad and to carry the chad through a duct 17 to a collector 19. The air-stream is generated by rotation in a housing 18 of vanes 35 secured to the drive-shaft 38 of a motor 36. This motor also operates the perforator. Air enters through a mesh-covered opening in a cover 50 and leaves through a mesh-covered outlet 44. The size of the mesh apertures of the outlet 44 can be adjusted to control the air flow whilst preventing the passage of chad therethrough. The relatively small cross-section of the duct 17 produces a high air velocity within it. In operation, the paper tape from a roll 12 is perforated by pins 32 of a punch block 30 entering a die block 31. The chad is drawn from the receiving shoot 16 through the duct 17 by the air-stream and enters the impeller housing 18, enclosing the vanes 35, through a conical connector 40. Beyond the adjustable mesh outlet 44 the chad falls from extension 43 gently into the container 19. The cover 50 is held in position by a spring 52. Should the shoot 16 become blocked with chad the cover hinges downwardly against the spring pressure to release the chad and so prevent damage to the perforator.</p> |
