A head restraint (1) has an inactive position (R) inside a motor vehicle's seat (2) or inside an upper end (2.2) of a seat back and an operating position (B) outside the seat back adjusted to the height of a driver's head. A sensor inside the motor vehicle's seat surface activates the head restraint.
