PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a white organic electroluminescent (EL) element emitting white-colored light having high luminance and high color purity. SOLUTION: This white organic EL element 20 has an organic layer 21 interposed between a positive electrode 11 and a negative electrode 18 on a substrate 10. In the organic layer 21, a blue luminescent layer 13, two hole blocking layers 15a and 15b, and a green luminescent layer 16 are stacked from the positive electrode side. The two hole blocking layers 15a and 15b catch a Dye layer 14. The Dye layer 14 has a thickness around 0.1-3 nm, and is formed of a red dye and a yellow dye. When a voltage is applied from a power source 22, blue light, green light and red light are emitted from the luminescent layer 13, the luminescent layer 16 and the Dye layer 14, respectively.
