Monoolefines are polymerized by use of a catalyst comprising (1) at least one of Pb, Sn, Bi and Te, together with Mg, the metals being dissolved or suspended in Hg, (2) at least one Group IVa, Va or VIa metal halide and optionally (3) an alkyl or aryl halide. Preferred components are (2) halides of Ti, Zr, V and Cr, and (3) ethyl bromide or bromobenzene, and it is preferred to effect the polymerization in an inert, e.g. hydrocarbon, solvent. The said metals of component (1) may be in the form of Mg alloys. Specified monomers are ethylene, propylene, butene (e.g. butene-1), pentene, hexene and styrene.
