980,534. Locking steering wheels. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. Jan. 6, 1964 [Jan. 5, 1963], No. 602/63. Heading B7J. A steering wheel lock 3 is supported by a housing 2 clamped to a steering column 5 with the aid of a cap 4, the lock having a tongue 6 which, in the locked position, engages within a recess 7 welded to the steering shaft 9. The locking device is located by a grub screw 12 accessible when the lock is removed from its housing and the cap 4 is secured to the housing 2 by a pair of breakhead bolts 15 whose heads shear off when the bolts are in a fully tightened position, in which position there is still slight clearance between the cap and housing, the device being fully clamped in place by a pair of conventional slotted head bolts 16. The arrangement facilitates axial movement of the device on the shaft, for servicing, by slackening the bolts 16, but not its complete removal.
