The operating method has the quality of the transmission link to the next point along the communications path determined at each intermediate station (2-5) along the communications path and at each communications terminal (1,6), with comparison of the transmission quality of the successive transmission links, e.g. using their measured signal/noise ratios and/or bit error rates, for selective disconnection of a transmission link and re-configuration of the communications path.
