A method of determining a vertical component (formula I) of particle velocity from seismic data acquired at a receiver disposed within a water column, comprises determining the vertical component of particle velocity from the pressure acquired at the receiver using a operator accurate for seismic data acquired at a depth beneath the surface of the water column of up to at least 0.4 times the minimum wavelength of seismic energy used to acquire the seismic data. The vertical component of particle velocity from the pressure acquired at the receiver may be determined using the equation (2). This equation is exact, and may be applied to seismic data acquired at any depth below the surface of the water column. Alternatively the equation may be truncated to reduce the processing required, although this may place a limit on the maximum depth of acquisition of data with which the truncated equation can be used.
