In a method for producing a consolidated mass of heat and sound insulating porous material, exfoliated mineral material such as exfoliated perlite or vermiculite is whirled up in a closed container, the particles being sprayed with a liquified high pressure atomized thermoplastic binder comprising for example bitumen or thermoplastic synthetic resin material, so that such individual particle is coated by a thin film of binder, and a loose flowable material is obtained which after having been brought into the space to be insulated or into a desired shape, is compacted by application of heat and/or pressure. In the construction of a floor or ceiling, the coated material is spread over the area, is consolidated and is then covered by a layer of paper or cardboard which is covered by a poured layer of hot liquid asphalt mastic, the heat emitted by the hot asphalt serving to soften the binder coatings on the particles of exfoliated mineral so as to bond the particles together. |
