A recording/reproducing apparatus for recording into or reproducing from an information recording medium (101). A recording/reproducing apparatus (1) comprising means for reading first data from a predetermined first position of a data recording area of the information recording medium (101); means for determining whether the first data is coincident with first type information indicative of the type of a predetermined first file system; means for performing a recording or reproducing processing by use of the first file system when it is determined that the first data is coincident with the first type information; means for reading second data from a predetermined second position in the data recording area when it is determined that the first data is not coincident with the first type information; means for determining whether the second data is coincident with second type information indicative of the type of a predetermined second file system that is different from the first file system; and means for performing a recording or reproducing processing by use of the second file system when it is determined that the second data is coincident with the second type information.
