PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter which is installed and retained at a low cost. SOLUTION: In this filter 20, a filter element 22 is installed to a base 24, and 1st and 2nd end caps 26, 28 are provided so as to separate each other in an axial direction. The fluid being filtered, after passing through a filtering medium 32 in a lateral direction 40, flows in an axial direction 42 through a hollow chamber and the inside of the opening for axial-direction flowing of the 2nd end cap 28. The filter element 22 is installed to the base 24 by the 2nd end cap 28 independently of the 1st end cap 26. Consequently, the need for the third part required in the past to install a housing cover to the base 24 thereby to cover and/or seal and /or retain the filter element 22 can be eliminated.
